My research focuses on two basic questions: 1) What is/are the mechanism(s) of salt-induced hypertension?, and 2) What are the processes involved in the organ damage, e.g., renal disease and myocardial infarction, associated with hypertension? Since approximately 75% of African Americans who are hypertensive are salt-sensitive and African Americans have a 3 to 10 times greater incidence of renal damage, my particular interest is that of salt-sensitive hypertension and the associated renal injury accompanying this form of hypertension. To address these questions, we use animal models of salt-sensitive hypertension and employ microarray molecular analysis for examining differential gene expression, Western analysis for determining differential protein expression, and basic physiological tools for assessing renal and cardiovascular function in normal, hypertensive, and hypertensive animals treated with various pharmacologic interventions.
