DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE - WELCOME

I'M NOT RAPAPORT - 1995

OVERVIEW

The National Award Winning NCCU Department of Theatre has been unique over the years because of the program's capacity to transform a creative notion about the theatre into practical knowledge and skills. North Carolina Central University's Department of Theatre is designed to satisfy the needs of a broad range of enthusiastic students; to give them the widest possible exposure to man's accomplishments in theatre and to experiences that will develop them as capable theatre practitioners. The most unique aspect of NCCU's Theatre program is the opportunity to choose from seven different theatre concentrations: Theatre Education, Technical Theatre, General Theatre, Performance, Theatre Administration, Theatre Communications and Musical Theatre (in progress). The Theatre Faculty designed the concentrations because of a growing concern for the future of our majors. Through our practical concentrations, they are being prepared to become performers, theatre teachers, designers and technicians, theatre arts managers, and to work in media.

The annual season, four major productions, is a highly significant cultural amenity for the university, the community and state. NCCU's major productions are also toured in NC to high schools and colleges. This affords students the opportunity to share their art with other audiences, many of which have limited opportunities to see live and culturally diverse theatre.

The comprehensive program of the Department of Theatre at NCCU has satisfied many of its intended goals by producing students who have succeeded in making theatre a practical part of their lives.

FACT SHEET

WHO WILL TEACH ME?
WHAT CAN I STUDY?
AND WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE IN THEATER?

The national award winning NCCU Department of Theater is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theater (NAST), the official accrediting agency for educational theater. Our Theatre Education Program is accredited by the State Department of Public Instruction (SDPI) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). There are seven faculty members and one artist in residence. They have won recognition through national competitions, varied publications, professional theater work, and community service. NCCU students with a major in Theater receive a liberal arts education and a general course of study in Theater Arts. They also have the opportunity to concentrate in one of the following:

  • General Theatre

  • Performance

  • Technical Theater

  • Theater Education (for teaching kindergarten through twelfth grade)

  • Theatre Communications

  • Theater Administration

  • Musical Theatre (in progress)

Most of these concentrations are interdepartmental, meaning some of the required courses are taught in other departments. The Theater Administration program, for example, includes courses from the School of Business and many of the Theatre Communications courses are taught in the Department of English.

Graduates from the Department of Theater are currently working in a variety of positions: as actors, directors and technicians in professional theater; as teachers in the public schools or higher education; as graduate students in advanced degree programs; or as professionals in related fields. A degree in theater does not limit a student's ability to work in other areas. Many students use this program as a pre professional degree in preparation for graduate study in Law, Business (especially Public Relations), the Ministry, Architecture, Product Design and other media areas such as Radio, Television, or Film. An undergraduate degree in Theater prepares a young adult for the professional work force through personal discipline, organizational skills, a creative outlook, an ability to collaborate and work with others, a broader appreciation of other cultures and beliefs, and an ability to present oneself in public in a positive and dynamic way.
