COST
Our services are offered free of charge when they are related to institutional and instructional projects. There is no labor charge to faculty for producing materials to be used in a scheduled NCCU class. For instructional projects, transparency film and mounting/lamination materials are free.

SCHEDULING
In general, the Creative Services Division asks that you allow 1-2 weeks for staff production of materials. Since work is performed on a first-come, first-served basis, the actual time required will depend on the number of jobs already scheduled.

If you have any questions concerning project scheduling and costs, please call the Center at (919) 530-6218.

Staff

The CUTL provides graphic design and production services for instructional, research, and administrative projects. Types of services provided include:

  • Graphics for print, video, and web pages
  • Digital scanning of 35mm film, slide, and flat art
  • Overhead transparency production
  • Advice and assistance with design of displays and posters for university-related activities
DIGITAL IMAGING

Creative Services can create digital images from slides, negatives, flat art, photographs, pictures from books and magazines, etc. (up to 8 1/2" x 14"). Also note Copyright Law section below.

Instructional Development Lab
This part of our Center is a self-service facility for the development of instructional materials. Faculty members and sponsored students may laminate materials, scan materials, bind, create booklets, etc.

Instructional and Non-Instructional Image Scanning
All projects involving scanning are subject to the "Fair Use" provisions of U.S. Copyright Law.

Faculty members who have multiple images to be scanned should contact the staff for an appointment. The staff will provide members of faculty or their assistants with the equipment and training to scan slides, negatives, and prints, and to perform simple manipulation of electronic images. In the event that a faculty member has a limited number of images that require more complex manipulations or optimization, Center staff will assist faculty with this task or offer expert instruction to the faculty member.

Staff will scan and/or manipulate a limited number of images for non-instructional purposes including, but not necessarily limited to, scanning of images for administrators or staff needing to make presentations on campus, etc. We recommend that clients contact us at (919) 530-6218 for time schedules and arrangements.

Users should provide their own disks or other blank media (DVDs, CD-R, USB drives, floppy, etc.) for saving their files.

VIDEO PRODUCTION
  • Duplication
The CUTL can copy videotapes from NTSC (USA standard) to NTSC and from PAL/SECAM (European) formats to NTSC. Staff of the CUTL will provide these services for instructional purposes and non-instructional purposes within the limits of the copyright laws (see Copyright Law section).
The faculty/staff member or department will be responsible for providing the blank media for the duplicates. Recommended brands are Memorex, Maxell, and TDK.
  • Video and Audio Transfer
CUTL equipment can transfer 8mm, MiniDV, and VHS videotapes to DVD disks. Because videotape is a magnetic medium, over the years, it gradually loses the ability to hold a video signal. Transferring important video footage to DVD is strongly recommended (within Copyright limitations). The Center can also duplicate audio CDs and cassette recordings, as well as transfer cassette recordings (also magnetic) to CDs. Blank disks should be provided by client.
  • Classroom Taping
The CUTL will provide camcorders and tripods to instructors for the taping of their class sessions and/or guest speakers for self-improvement, archival or instructional purposes.
The client must provide tapes they wish to keep. CUTL staff will train the instructor or a designated student in the use of camcorders. Scheduled taping by Center staff is provided on a limited basis.
  • Television Studio
The CUTL has a TV studio with professional lighting, sound, and video equipment. Production is 2-camera, digital and S-VHS format with graphics. The studio will be available for classes, interviews, small panel discussions, dramatic vignettes, etc.

BINDING SERVICES
  • Binding (Velo, Ring, Comb, etc.)
  • Folding machine for letters and pamphlets

COPYRIGHT LAW

It is illegal to copy all of a copyrighted DVDs, videotapes, or programming off-air or off-satellite without the written permission of the holder of the copyright. For permissible off-air and off-satellite taping, the CUTL will provide the tape and will control the circulation for preview to ensure strict compliance with the copyright laws.

Copyright law allows recording of aired programs for instructional purposes during broadcast for use once per class during the 10 days following the broadcast date. The tape can be retained in the CUTL an additional 35 days for purchase consideration. After a total of 45 days, the program must be erased or purchased.
