EAGLE FOOTBALL FALLS TO BOWIE STATE, TURNOVERS PROVE COSTLY
"We were our own worst enemy," said Eagle head coach Larry Little, after NCCU lost to Bowie State, 21-19.  The Eagles committed three turnovers, including one fumble that was returned for a touchdown on the last play of the first half.  NCCU also had a long touchdown pass denied by a holding penalty.

NCCU women's volleyball earns dramatic come-from-behind victory over Johnson C. Smith for its 20th consecutive win.  Trailing 2-0 in games, the Lady Eagles win the last three games, including a 20-18 advantage in the final game, to escape Charlotte with a 3-2 victory.  Junior Rena Armwood amassed 22 kills and 22 digs, playing in the final four games, to lead NCCU.

LATE TOUCHDOWN LIFTS FAYETTEVILLE STATE PAST NCCU, 22-17
Fayetteville State scores a touchdown with 28 seconds left in the game to lift the Broncos past NCCU, 22-17.  Trailing 16-10 on a fourth down and 29 play, NCCU quarterback Warren Bell throws a pass into the endzone, the ball is deflected by Durant McCathern and caught by Ryan Walden for a touchdown as the Eagles go ahead 17-16 with 4:54 remaining in the contest.  However, after an onsides kick is penalized, the Broncos get the ball at the NCCU 24 yard-line, and go on for the game-winning touchdown run.

(May 23, 1998) -- NCCU senior Elisha Marshall (pictured right) captured the elusive national title in the women's 100-meter dash on Saturday, May 23 at the 1998 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois.

NCCU ASSISTANT FOOTBALL COACH ANTHONY PRICE DIES
(May 11, 1998) -- Anthony Price, an assistant football coach at North Carolina Central University and a 1980 graduate of NCCU, died Monday (May 11) morning of apparent heart failure.  Price was 42.

A celebrity roster of former National Football League players, including 16 N.F.L. Hall-of-Famers and an all-star cast from the Superbowl VII Champion Miami Dolphins (the only undefeated team in N.F.L. history), will converge onto the grounds of Stoney Creek Golf Course on Saturday, July 25, for the third annual Larry Little Celebrity Golf Invitational.

  NCCU & WSSU ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP, ESTABLISH "MIDWAY CLASSIC"
(May 6, 1998) -- The Athletic Directors at NCCU and Winston-Salem State University announced the establishment of a promotional agreement, and introduced the "Midway Football Classic" as the initial project of the newly-formed partnership.

  NCCU JOINS EASTERN COLLEGE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
(April 16, 1998) -- NCCU joins ECAC, the nation's largest collegiate athletic conference with over 292 member colleges and universities ranging from Maine to North Carolina in Divisions I, II and III.  The move does not change conference status with CIAA.

NCCU WINS CIAA CHAMPIONSHIP 
The Eagles won the 1998 CIAA Men's Tennis Championship (PHOTO), NCCU's first team conference title in 14 years.

DAVID NASS SELECTED 1998 CIAA COACH OF THE YEAR 
Second-year head coach David Nass was chosen as the 1998 CIAA Tennis Coach of the Year, as the Eagles finished the season with a 12-0 conference record.

  SOFTBALL
LADY EAGLE SOFTBALL WINS CIAA TITLE 

The NCCU softball team won the 1998 CIAA Softball Championship (PHOTO), the school's first softball conference title since the sport was established at NCCU in 1977.

MICHELLE HARRISON NAMED 1998 CIAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR 
Senior shortstop Michelle Harrison was selected as the 1998 CIAA Softball Player of the Year, while sophomore Stephanie Spindler and freshman Lisa Hicks also earned conference honors.

ELISHA MARSHALL NAMED "MOST OUTSTANDING TRACK ATHLETE"

Senior defensive back Buddy Crutchfield signed a two-year contract with the Washington Redskins of the National Football League.

ELISHA MARSHALL EARNS NCAA INDOOR TRACK ALL-AMERICA HONORS
Senior Elisha Marshall placed second in the women's 55-meter dash with a time of 6.95 at the 1998 NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, to earn All-America Honors for the third consecutive year.  (Other Results from NCAA Indoor Track Championships)

JIMMY BOSTON NAMED CIAA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, ALL-SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION
Freshman Jimmy Boston (pictured right) was selected to the 1998 Daktronics/All-South Atlantic Region Men's Basketball Team (PHOTO). An All-Region Second Team honoree, Boston was also recently named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Rookie of the Year after averaging 12.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game during the 1997-98 season.
