NCCU TO RETIRE 15 BASKETBALL JERSEYS SATURDAY
DURHAM, NC - North Carolina Central University
will retire 15 basketball jerseys on Saturday (Feb. 5) during halftime
of the men's basketball game against Winston-Salem State University inside
McLendon-McDougald Gym in Durham, NC.
Twelve men and three women will be the first
to have their jerseys hung in NCCU's historic McLendon-McDougald Gym.
The honorees are: Sam Jones (1951-54/56-57),
a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and one of the Top 50
All-Time NBA Players who is NCCU's second all-time leading scorer with
1,745 career points; Charles "Tex" Harrison (1950-54), a long-time
player and coach with the Harlem Globetrotters who was a member of the
1950 CIAA Tournament Championship team and scored 1,304 points as an Eagle;
Ted Manning (1962-66), NCCU's all-time leading scorer with 2,086
career points; LeVelle Moton (1992-96), the 1996 CIAA Men's Basketball
Player of the Year and the school's third all-time leading scorer with
1,714 career points; Reginald "Hawk" Ennis, a three-time All-CIAA
selection and member of the 1941 CIAA Visitation Championship team; Harold
Hunter, a two-time CIAA All-Tournament Team member who became the first
black athlete to sign an NBA contract on April 6, 1950; Rudolph "Rocky"
Roberson, who set a new national scoring record with 58 points against
Shaw University on Feb. 6, 1943, and was a member of the 1941 CIAA Visitation
Championship team; John Brown, who was a member of the school's
first CIAA Visitation Championship in 1941; Ernest "Hands" Warlick
(1948-51), a member of the 1950 CIAA Tournament Championship team who scored
1,407 points as an Eagle; Harvey Heartley (1951-55), a member of
two CIAA Visitation Championship teams in 1954 and 1955, who is among the
school's all-time leaders in career free throws made; Troy Weaver
(1949-52), an All-CIAA and CIAA All-Tournament Team honoree on NCCU's 1950
CIAA Tournament Championship team; Aubrey Stanley (1943-47), a member
of the school's first CIAA Tournament Championship team in 1946 who scored
1,006 points as an Eagle; Amba Kongolo (1999-2002), a two-time CIAA
Women's Basketball Player of the Year (2001 and 2002) and 2002 NCAA Division
II All-American, who became the first CIAA student-athlete drafted by the
WNBA after amassing 1,536 points and 833 rebounds as a Lady Eagle; Von
Fulmore (1984-87), a three-time All-CIAA selection and NCAA Division
II All-American who led the nation in rebounds in 1986 and posted NCCU
single-game records of 41 points and 32 rebounds versus UNC-Asheville on
Feb. 1, 1986; and Michelle Harrison (1993-97), a member of the CIAA
25th Anniversary Women's Basketball Team who is the school's leader in
career steals with 382, is second in assists with 303, and third in points
with 1,448.
