NCCU CLAIMS FOUR WEEKLY CIAA BASKETBALL HONORS
Lady Eagles Sweep Conference Awards, Worthy Named
Men's Top Rookie
HAMPTON, VA -- North Carolina Central University
captured four of the six weekly basketball honors handed out by the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association on Jan. 1, including a Lady Eagle
sweep and freshman forward Joshua Worthy as the CIAA Men's Basketball
Rookie of the Week.
Senior forward Cassie King was selected
as the CIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, freshman forward Jori
Nwachukwu was named CIAA Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, and
head coach Joli Robinson was tagged CIAA Women's Basketball Coach
of the Week after the Lady Eagles won both games at USC Upstate's 2006
Allstate Insurance Holiday Classic. NCCU defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 79-75 and
Lincoln Memorial 65-60, only LMU's second loss of the season (7-2). Both
King and Nwachukwu were voted to the Allstate Insurance Holiday Classic
All-Tournament Team.
King, a 6-0 native of Wendell, N.C., averaged
22.0 points and 6.5 rebounds during NCCU's two victories, while adding
four assists, three blocked shots and seven steals. In her best performance,
she amassed 30 points, seven boards, six steals and two assists against
Lenoir-Rhyne on Dec. 29.
Nwachukwu, a 5-10 native of Upper Marlboro,
Md., averaged 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds during the weekend series to
capture her third weekly conference honor this season. In her best outing,
she tallied 18 points, six rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and
an assist versus Lincoln Memorial on Dec. 30.
Worthy, a 6-4, 200-pound native of Lewisville,
Texas, collected nine points, four rebounds and two steals during NCCU's
two-game road trip to Columbus, Ga. on Dec. 29-30. In his best effort,
Worthy came off the bench to spark the Eagles with seven points, three
boards and a steal against Columbus State on Dec. 30.
