NCCU'S KING, FUTRELL HONORED BY CIAA
HAMPTON, VA -- North Carolina Central University
junior Cassie King and freshman Charles Futrell claimed weekly
basketball honors from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(CIAA) for the week of Jan 1-7.
King, a 6-0 forward from Wendell, N.C., was
selected as the CIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week after scoring
a season-high 30 points, on 10-11 (91 percent) shooting from the floor
during NCCU's 82-59 win over Fayetteville State University on Saturday
(Jan. 7). Against the Broncos, King contributed in nearly every statistical
category amassing eight rebounds, four steals, a block and an assist. King
currently leads the CIAA in total points scored with 225, is second in
points per game averaging 20.5 and is fifth in the conference averaging
9.1 rebounds per game.
Futrell, a 6-6 forward from Fayetteville,
N.C., was voted CIAA Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the third
time in four weeks, after recording a game-high 14 points and contributing
six rebounds in a 75-70 win against the Broncos of Fayetteville State.
Futrell, who joined the team after playing wide receiver and quarterback
for the CIAA champion NCCU football team, leads the Eagles in rebounds
per game averaging 10.0 per contest. Because Futrell jointed the team after
football season, he is not yet eligible to be considered among the CIAA
league leaders. The CIAA mandates that a player compete in 75 percent of
their teams games before they are eligible. If not for this rule, Futrell
would currently be ranked second in the CIAA in rebounds per game.
On Tuesday (Jan. 10), NCCU hosts Bowie
State University. The action at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium begins
with the women's game at 5:30 p.m., as the Lady Eagles (10-1) look to improve
upon their best start in school history, followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
