NCCU SWEEPS WEEKLY CIAA BASKETBALL ROOKIE HONORS

Jori NwachukwuTremain Holloway     HAMPTON, VA -- North Carolina Central University freshmen forwards Jori Nwachukwu and Tremain Holloway have been voted as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's and Men's Basketball Rookies of the Week for the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3.
Nwachukwu, a native of Upper Marlboro, Md., averaged 16.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game during two NCCU victories last week. In her best outing, the 5-10 forward recorded 20 points, eight rebounds, two steals and an assist against Johnson C. Smith on Jan. 30. This is Nwachukwu's fourth CIAA Rookie of the Week honor (Dec. 4, Dec. 11, Dec. 30, Feb. 5).
Holloway, a 6-5, 185-pound forward from Rocky Mount, N.C., sparked the Eagles to a 66-65 upset victory over regionally-ranked Virginia State University on Feb. 2. The rookie came off the bench for his first action of the game with 13 minutes left and the Eagles trailing by 12 points against the heavily-favored Trojans. Holloway hit all five of his field goal attempts and went 2-for-3 from the free-throw line for a season-high 12 points and, with his team down by two and the clock ticking down, he set a screen that freed up teammate Chris Mayshack for the game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. Along with his 12 points, Holloway contributed four rebounds, an assist and a steal against VSU to claim his first weekly conference award.
Both NCCU women's and men's basketball squads return to the hardwood on Tuesday (Feb. 6) night against Fayetteville State University. The doubleheader begins at 5:30 p.m.
