NCCU'S STEWART, FUTRELL VOTED TO CIAA ALL-ROOKIE HOOPS
TEAMS
HAMPTON, VA -- North Carolina Central University
freshmen Nakisha Stewart and Charles Futrell have been voted
to their respective CIAA All-Rookie Teams, as voted on by the CIAA-Sports
Information Directors' Association.
Stewart, a 6-0 forward from Louisburg, N.C.,
ranks second on the team in scoring and rebounding with an average of 9.3
points and 5.8 boards per contest, and boasts the sixth-best field goal
percentage in the conference, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor (65-for-122).
A three-time CIAA Rookie of the Week selection
(Nov. 27, Jan. 15, Feb. 12), Stewart enjoyed her best overall performance
on Valentine's Day at Elizabeth City State with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Stewart was a four-time conference player
of the year at Bunn High School and broke the state's scholastic career
rebounding record with 1,553 caroms.
Futrell, a 6-6 forward from Fayetteville,
N.C., leads the Eagles and is ninth in the league in rebounding with an
average of 6.6 boards per game, and is second on the team in scoring with
10.3 points per outing. He also ranks second in the conference in field
goal percentage with a 61.5 percent success rate from the floor (75-for-122).
A three-time CIAA Rookie of the Week pick
(Dec. 11, Jan. 1, Jan. 8), Futrell has four double-doubles to his credit.
In a few of his better efforts, he amassed 12 points and season-high 17
rebounds versus Columbus State (Dec. 10), then collected a season-high
19 points and 10 rebounds at Columbus State (Dec. 30). In his first college
basketball game, he recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds against Lenoir-Rhyne
(Dec. 2).

Honorees
HAMPTON, VA- The 2006 CIAA Basketball
All-Rookie teams have been announced as voted on by the CIAA-Sports Information
Directors' Association.
Katania Walker of Virginia State University
has been selected as the 2006 CIAA Women's Rookie of the Year. A
Sports Management major who hails from Virginia Beach, VA,
Walker is the Lady Trojans' second leading scorer at 12.3 points
per game. In the CIAA she tops all rookie women ranking 17th in scoring,
is 7th in both three-point field goal percentage and three-point
field goals made, is 4th in free throw percentage and 15th in steals.
For the men, Bruce Royal of Saint Paul's
College has been named 2006 CIAA Rookie of the Year. Royal, who has started
every game this season for the Tigers, is averaging a conference best 6.39
assists per game. He also ranks 4th in minutes played, 18th in scoring
(13.0 ppg), and 10th in both steals and assist/turnover ratio. A native
of Newport News, VA, he is majoring in Business Administration.
The Men's and Women's All-Rookie Basketball
teams will be honored at their respective tip off banquets in Charlotte,
NC the week of the 2006 CIAA Basketball Tournament. A complete list of
