NCCU SWEEPS SAC FOR FIRST CIAA WINS
Raleigh, NC – Playing in its first baseball
season since 1975, North Carolina Central University won its first conference
games in over 30 years, defeating Saint Augustine's 11-3 and 13-10 in a
double-header on Saturday at Emery Field.
NCCU (4-9, 2-0) freshman pitcher Alex
Weathersby, a native of Raleigh, N.C., pitched seven strong innings allowing
only three runs and striking out six in the first contest. A four-run second
inning, keyed by a RBI triple from freshman outfielder Tim McCalister,
gave Weathersby all the run support he would need. After allowing three
runs in the first three innings, Weathersby didn't allow another hit in
the game as NCCU cruised to an 11-3 victory, it's first in the CIAA and
its third of the season. Sophomore outfielder Oliver Jenkins recorded a
hit, three runs scored and a stolen base to lead head coach Henry White's
squad.
In the second game of the double-header live
bats and a keen ability to steal were the keys to a 13-10 victory, as eight
Eagles hit safely in the contest, including three-hits from freshman infielder
Justin Goodson.
Also, amazingly enough, NCCU accumulated 19
stolen bases against the Falcons with Jenkins amassing four, Goodson tallying
four, freshman infielder Kurt Wilson swiping three bases and freshman first-baseman
Greg Pickett totaling six steals. After trailing 9-6 entering the sixth
inning, NCCU scored five runs on only two hits in the inning to eventually
win the matchup 13-10.
NCCU returns home on Wednesday Feb. 28 at
4 p.m. to face Belmont-Abbey.
