EAGLES BASEBALL SWEEPS FINAL WEEKLY CIAA AWARDS
HAMPTON, VA – North Carolina Central University senior
outfielder Marcus Mack was selected as the CIAA Baseball Player
of the Week, junior pitcher Mike Cornwell was selected as the CIAA
Pitcher of the Week, sophomore third baseman Robert Landis as the
CIAA Offensive Player of the Week, junior catcher Seth O'Brien
as
CIAA Defensive Player of the Week and head coach Henry White as
CIAA Coach of the Week, the CIAA announced on Wednesday.
Mack, a native of Fayetteville, N.C., had
nine hits, nine runs scored, eight runs batted-in, a double and a homerun
in just 12 at-bats during the week. He also stole six bases and went 2-2
with a homerun, in a pivotal late-season matchup with arch-rival Shaw University.
Cornwell, who struck out five batters in his
two appearances, went a perfect 2-0 during the week. Cornwell held opposing
batters to a .250 batting average and allowed only one run (1.35 ERA) in
6.2 innings pitched.
The CIAA Offensive Player of the Week was
Landis, a native of Winston-Salem, NC. Landis, who had a batting average
of .438 in six games, recorded seven hits, scored five runs, batted in
11 runs, hit one homerun and stole one base.
NCCU's starting catcher, O'Brien earned the
Defensive Player of the Week award by accumulating 16 putouts and assisting
on eight others. Despite winning the conference's defensive weekly honor,
O'Brien had a solid week at the plate as well. O'Brien scored four runs
and amassed five runs batted in, three doubles and six hits in 14 at-bats.
White, in his first season as NCCU's head coach,
led NCCU to the CIAA Regular Season title after posting a 5-1 record in
the season's final week. NCCU swept St. Paul's University and Virginia
State University, while splitting a pair with SU. All contests were road
games.
