1999 CIAA COMMISSIONER'S ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM ANNOUNCED
HAMPTON, VA -- Twenty student-athletes from the
Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association have been named to the second
annual CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team, the CIAA announced Thursday
(May 20).
"The student-athletes selected to this team
symbolize the elite of the CIAA," said CIAA Commissioner Leon G. Kerry.
"I commend these students for upholding the standard of excellence set
forth by the conference, as well as, upholding their own personal goals
and achievements."
The 1999 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic
Team consists of 20 student-athletes, 10 on the First Team and 10 on the
Second Team, as voted on by the CIAA Sports Information Directors' Association.
The average grade point average of the First Team is a 3.890, and the average
for the Second Team is a 3.669 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
The 1999 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic
First Team consists of Schavonne Brown, Samuel Hairston, Jennifer Hardison
and Monica Jacobs of Fayetteville State; Ansel Brown and Karla Mark of
North Carolina Central; Shakima Chambers of Shaw; Akin Ayorinde Minnis
of Saint Augustine's; Laurie Underwood of Winston-Salem State; and Alicia
Washington of Johnson C. Smith (see attachment).
The 1999 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic
Second Team includes Rebecca Freeman, Lisa Hicks, Yolanda McDowell and
Stephanie Spindler of NCCU; Lynetta Anderson and Bianca Darlene Ellis of
FSU; Lucinda Brown of Virginia Union; Portia Joyner of Saint Paul's; William
Keen of Bowie State; and Christa West of WSSU (see attachment).
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have
completed one full academic year at a CIAA institution, earned a minimum
3.20 overall grade point average, and played as a starter of important
reserve in a CIAA sanctioned sport.
