NCCU'S MAROON-GRAY GRIDIRON BATTLE ENDS IN DRAW
DURHAM, NC -- After more than an hour of no-huddle
gridiron action inside O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium, the North Carolina Central
University "Maroon & Gray" football scrimmage ended in a draw, as neither
the offense or defense gained a decisive advantage over the other.
The Gray offense scored two touchdowns, tallied 15 first downs and amassed
289 total yards, while the Maroon squad collected five sacks with 14 defensive
stops, including two interceptions.
The bright spot for the Eagle offense was
sophomore quarterback Adrian Warren, a reserve quarterback at West
Virginia University in 2000, who completed 19-of-50 passes for 194 yards
and two touchdowns, while also rushing for a game-high 32 yards on 18 carries.
The 6-6, 210-pound Raleigh, NC native also plays basketball at NCCU. Warren
averaged 4.7 points and 3.9 rebounds while appearing in all 29 games for
the Eagles during the 2002-03 season.
NCCU sophomore receiver James Taylor
and junior tight end Quincy Pedew topped the receiving corps with
four catches and a touchdown apiece. Taylor finished with 63 receiving
yards, including a 50-yard touchdown scamper, while Pedew totaled 31 yards
with a 5-yard touchdown reception.
Sophomore linebacker Shamar Robinson
led all defenders with eight tackles (six solo), while defensive back Richard
Rogers chipped in seven takedowns (six solo). Defensive lineman Brandon
Hampton collected four tackles (three solo), including 2.5 hits behind
the line of scrimmage with a sack. Junior linebacker Marcus Glasgow
tallied four tackles (three solo) with two sacks and a pass break-up. Linebacker
Antwan
Lyons and corner back Jermod Mapp each recorded interceptions
for the Eagles.
Rod Broadway, announced as NCCU's new head football coach on Jan.
8, made his O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium debut Saturday.
"It's hard to change to a new system," Broadway
said. "Going from an option offense to a passing attack is an adjustment
for these guys, and we are trying to get them as comfortable as we can
with what we are doing."
As a team, the Eagles amassed 95 ground yards
on 42 carries and 194 passing yards on 51 throws, averaging 3.11 yards
per play.
"We are going to play fast-paced," said Broadway.
"We got 96 plays in, in a little more than an hour. So it's fast. If we
get 100 plays in a game, we'll be in good shape."
