NCCU'S McCLELLAN INKS NFL FREE AGENT DEAL WITH CAROLINA

Julius McClellan     CHARLOTTE, NC -- North Carolina Central University wide receiver Julius McClellan has signed a free agent contract with the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League.
     McClellan, a 6-4, 246-pound native of Lakeland, Fla., amassed 41 receptions, 690 yards and 11 touchdowns during his two-year career at NCCU (2005-06), finishing with 983 all-purpose yards (690 receiving, 37 rushing, 256 kickoff return). He will participate in the team's upcoming mini-camp on Friday, May 4 through Sunday, May 6 at the team's practice facility at Bank of America Stadium.
     As a senior, McClellan earned All-CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) Second Team honors after catching 24 passes for 371 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing six times for 37 yards, and returning five kickoffs for 111 yards. In his best outing of the season, he recorded 175 all-purpose yards versus Lenoir-Rhyne (Sept. 9) with three catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and three kickoff returns for 72 yards. As a team, the Eagles recorded the school’s first-ever undefeated regular season, posted an overall record of 11-1, repeated as CIAA Champions, earned the No. 1 ranking in the Southeast Region, finished as the No. 4 ranked team in the NCAA Division II (AFCA), and captured the school’s first-ever SBN Black College National Championship.
Julius McClellan (photo by Robert Lawson)     As a junior, McClellan caught 17 passes for 319 yards and six touchdowns and returned six kickoffs for 145 yards (24.2 avg.). He was on the receiving end of a 60-yard, fourth quarter, game-tying touchdown pass in the CIAA Championship Game against Bowie State (Nov. 5). The team recorded the school’s first-ever 10-win season (10-2), won the school’s first CIAA Championship in 25 years, and advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 1988.
     The Criminal Justice major also averaged 8.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as a forward/center for the 2005-06 NCCU basketball team.
     McClellan transferred to NCCU from Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He was ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 5 junior college prospect in the country for 2005, after amassing more than 2,300 yards and 30 touchdowns in two seasons (2003, 2004) with the Tigers.
