     WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The North Carolina Central University men's golf team won its first competition of the season by defeating Saint Augustine's College, Johnson C. Smith University and host Winston-Salem State University at the WSSU Golf Invitational at Winston-Lake Golf Club.  
     NCCU finished first in the four-team tournament with a combined score of 364.  Placing second was Johnson C. Smith, who turned in a score of 399.  Third place went St. Augustine's with a total of 417, and WSSU finished not far behind with a total of 427.
     Steve Wright, last season's CIAA Rookie of the Year out of Durham, NC, led the Eagles with a score of 78 (38+40), followed by Ernie Batchelor (93), Morgan Pierce (95) and Maylon Fowler (98).
     WSSU was participating in its first NCAA men's golf competition in 17 years.
