NCCU GOLF SNAPS FAYETTEVILLE STATE'S STREAK OF CIAA WEST TITLES
LOUISBURG, N.C. -- Fayetteville State University was the only school to
ever win the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Western
Division Men's Golf Championship since the event started in 1998 ... until
Tuesday.
North Carolina Central University snapped
the Broncos' eight-year winning streak by rallying on day two to capture
the 2006 CIAA Western Division golf title at Bull Creek Golf Course in
Louisburg, N.C.
The Eagles, sevens strokes behind FSU after
day one, fired a team score of 317 on day two to win the division crown
by six strokes.
NCCU was topped by Brian Demby, who
placed second overall with a two-day total of 149, including a 73 on day
two. Newcomer Dustin McCray finished in a tie for fifth place with
a 158 (76/82), while Eagle veteran Steve Wright rounded out the
top 10 with a 161 (79/82).
The golfers bravely battled the course and
strong wind gusts at Bull Creek, which resulted in high scores for many
participants the second day.
