TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY GRABS EARLY DIV. 1
LEAD AT NATIONAL MINORITY COLLEGE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Senior Robert Dinwiddie of Tennessee State University
carded a 3-under-par 69 to lead the Division I standings after the first
round of the 2005 National Minority College Golf Championship at the PGA
Golf Club (North Course) in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
"I played an extremely steady round and considering that I did not hit
the ball brilliantly well, I am pleased with my round," said Dinwiddie
who is from Barnard Castle, England. "On hole No. 5, I hit a little 9-iron
from about 150 yards and holed about a 30-foot putt for a birdie, which
gave me confidence for the rest of the round."
Tennessee State University of Nashville leads the Division I standings
with a team total of 4-under-par 284. Bethune-Cookman College of Daytona
Beach, Fla., is in second place with a team total of 2-under-par 286. Two-time
defending champion Johnson & Wales University of North Miami, Fla.,
is currently 14 shots off the pace in fourth place.
Lincoln University of Jefferson City, Mo., posted a team total of 22-over-par
310 to grab the lead in the Division II standings by three strokes over
North Carolina Central University of Durham.
Ian Milne of Fayetteville State University and Christopher Parker of
Johnson C. Smith University share the lead in the Division II Individual
standings with a 2-over-par 74.
"I had one bad break on hole No. 6 where I pulled the ball left, resulting
in a double bogey," said Milne, a sophomore from Fayetteville, N.C., who
won the 2005 CIAA Western Division Championship and the 2005 Camp Lejuene
Collegiate Championship.
In the Women's Division, the two-time defending champion Lady Broncos
of The University of Texas-Pan American of Edinburg, posted a team total
of 306 to hold a two-stroke lead over Bethune-Cookman College. Junior Stefanie
Maynard of Pflugerville, Texas leads the division standings with a 1-over-par
73.
"I started out the round on the back nine and played alright," said
Maynard, the two-time defending champion. "The highlight of my round was
on hole No. 6 where I made an eagle by hitting a driver down the middle
of the fairway, followed by a 3-wood which landed about two inches off
the front of the green. I then finished the hole by making a 23-foot putt."
Doug Smith II of the University of Louisville carded a 4-over-par 76
to lead the Men's Independent Division standings, while Tiffany DiPanni
of Johnson & Wales likewise finished with a 76 to lead the Women's
Independent Division standings.
Approximately 100 contestants from 21 colleges and universities, representing
11 countries comprise the field for the 19th National Minority College
Golf Championship. The Championship concludes after the third round on
Sunday, May 8. The National Minority College Golf Championship is co-sponsored
by The PGA of America and the National Minority College Golf Scholarship
Fund of Cleveland, Ohio.
