NCCU'S SMITH NAMED MASTER STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH
SALT LAKE CITY, UT - George Smith, Senior Associate Athletics Director
for External Affairs and Director of Strength and Conditioning at North
Carolina Central University, has been named Master Strength and Conditioning
Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa).
This honor is the highest given in the strength
and conditioning profession, and the ceremony is undoubtedly the highlight
of the National Conference each year. Master Strength and Conditioning
Coach Jeff Madden, from the University of Texas, presented Smith with the
blue MSCC Jacket on Thursday evening, May 11, 2006.
"This is an incredible honor for George,"
said CSCCa Executive Director, Chuck Stiggins. "Being named a Master
Strength and Conditioning Coach signifies a commitment to the student athlete,
a commitment to North Carolina Central University Athletics, and a commitment
to the strength and conditioning profession. We are honored to have
George Smith as a member of our association and to have him join the ranks
of the Master Strength and Conditioning Coaches. He is truly a model
of an outstanding strength and conditioning professional."
In order to receive this certification and
corresponding title of distinction, an individual must first meet the following
criteria:
1) Hold a minimum of a bachelors degree;
2) Be a currently practicing, full-time strength
& conditioning coach on the collegiate level;
3) Hold current membership in the Collegiate
Strength & Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa);
4) Hold the CSCCa Certification - SCCC
(Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified); and
5) Be a full-time, collegiate, and/or professional
strength & conditioning coach for a minimum of 12 years.
Seven collegiate strength & conditioning
coaches received the prestigious certification of Master Strength &
Conditioning Coach at the 2006 MSCC Ceremony: George Smith (North Carolina
Central University); Scott Bennett (University of Wyoming); LeBaron Caruthers
(previously at Baylor University-Emeritus Status); Corliss Fingers (University
of Maryland); Tom Kelso (Saint Louis University); Pat Moorer (University
of South Carolina); and Greg Werner (James Madison University). These
seven coaches joined the existing 50 Master Strength & Conditioning
Coaches, bringing the total number of MSCC's to 57.

GEORGE "BULLDOG" SMITH BIO:
More commonly known as "Bulldog," George Smith
is wrapping up his fifth year with NCCU as Senior Associate Athletics Director
for External Affairs and Director of Strength and Conditioning.
Smith came to NCCU via the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was Assistant Athletics Director and
Director of Strength and Conditioning from 1993-2000. He has also worked
in strength and conditioning at the University of Colorado (1992), Georgia
Southern (1989-91), and Fairfield Central High School.
A native of Denmark, SC, Smith earned both
his undergraduate (1984) and master's (1987) degrees from the University
of South Carolina, where he was a two-year starter on the offensive line.
During his high school days at Denmark Olar, Smith was named State Player
of the Year.
In the spring of 2003, Smith was among 21 minority athletic administrators
nationally to graduate from the 2003 NCAA Leadership Institute for Minority
Males.
He and his wife Michelle are the proud parents
of two sons, Jayden and Zane.
