NCCU ANNOUNCES 2005 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME CLASS

     DURHAM, NC - North Carolina Central University will induct 10 individuals and two teams into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame during a banquet on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center. 
     The NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2005 includes Charles Bailey (Football - 1969-72), a team captain and All-NAIA selection for the 1972 MEAC Championship football team who went on to play professionally with the Houston Oilers; Robert Curington (Football - 1960-63), the leading scorer and rusher for the Eagles' 1963 CIAA Championship football team who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1964; Von Fulmore (Women's Basketball - 1984-87), a three-time All-CIAA women's basketball honoree and 1986 NCAA Division II First-Team All-American in 1986 who is the school's fifth all-time leading scorer and second all-time leading rebounder; Robert Little (Men's Basketball - 1971-75), a two-time All-MEAC men's basketball pick who is the school's 11th all-time leading scorer with 1,310 points; Robert McAdams (Football - 1956-57, 1961-62), a lineman on two CIAA Championship football teams in 1956 and 1961 who was drafted by the New York Giants in 1963; James Price (Football - 1961-64), a lineman on two CIAA Championship football teams in 1961 and 1963 who signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers in 1965; Milton "Toby" Fitch, a member of NCCU's football team from 1965-68 who served as Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach from 1969-1973 to help lead the Eagles to MEAC Championships in 1972 and 1973; Margratha Y. Chambers, a member of the Women's Athletic Association (WAA) from 1967-71 who served as WAA President from 1970-71 and was voted as WAA Athlete of the Year in 1971; Catherine Gamble Armwood, a member of the Women's Athletic Association from 1965-70 who was selected as the 1968 WAA Athlete of the Year and played on NCCU's tennis team in 1968-69; and Alyce Peaks Little, a cheerleading advisor for more than 10 years who will be inducted posthumously.
     The two teams to be inducted are the 1961 football team, winners of the CIAA Championship and the only undefeated squad in Eagles' gridiron history with a 7-0-2 record; and the 1963 football team, CIAA Champions with an 8-1 record. Both teams were led by legendary head coach Herman Riddick.
     On Saturday, Oct. 22, hall of fame members will have a group picture taken on the steps of McLendon-McDougald Gym at 12 noon, followed by the Hall of Fame Pre-Game Reception. Members of the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame will be recognized and new inductees introduced during halftime of the football game between NCCU and Livingstone College at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
     Banquet tickets are on sale for $50 at the NCCU Ticket Office, located in the Student Union (919-530-5170).

2005 NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

Athlete
Charles Bailey (Football - 1969-72) - Team Captain and All-NAIA selection for the 1972 MEAC Championship team. Played professionally with the Houston Oilers. Player Personnel Director for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL.

Robert Curington (Football - 1960-63) - Leading scorer and rusher for the Eagles 1963 CIAA Championship team. Selected First-Team All-CIAA and First-Team Pittsburgh Courier All-American in 1963. Ranks 11th on NCCU's all-time scoring list with 122 points. Selected in the eighth round of the 1964 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Von Fulmore (Women's Basketball - 1984-87) - Selected as an NCAA Division II First-Team All-American in 1986 after leading the nation in rebounds (464) and rebounds per game (17.8). Three-time All-CIAA honoree (1985-87). Scored a school-record 636 points during the 1985-86 season. Amassed school-record (at the time) 41 points and 32 rebounds in a regulation game against UNC-Asheville on Feb. 1, 1986. School's fifth all-time leading scorer and second all-time leading rebounder.

Robert Little (Men's Basketball - 1971-75) - School's 11th all-time leading scorer with 1,310 points. Named All-MEAC during his junior and senior seasons (1974 and 1975). Played professionally with the Harlem Globetrotters, traveling around the world with the squad from 1975-76.

Robert McAdams (Football - 1956-57, 1961-62) - Lineman on two CIAA Championship teams in 1956 and 1961. Drafted by the New York Giants in 1963. Played with the New York Jets (1963-64).

James Price (Football - 1961-64) - Lineman on two CIAA Championship teams in 1961 and 1963. Signed free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers (1965).
 

Meritorious Service
Alyce Peaks Little (posthumously - represented by daughter Denise Harrington) - Served as Cheerleading Advisor for more than 10 years.

Milton "Toby" Fitch - Member of NCCU's football team from 1965-68. Served as Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach from 1969-1973, helping to lead the Eagles to MEAC Championships in 1972 and 1973.

Margratha Y. Chambers - Member of the Women's Athletic Association (WAA) from 1967-71, serving as WAA President from 1970-71. Voted as WAA Athlete of the Year in 1971. Has coached women's sports teams for 33 years since graduating from NCCU in 1971.

Catherine Gamble Armwood - Member of the Women's Athletic Association (WAA) from 1965-70, and was selected as the 1968 WAA Athlete of the Year. Played on NCCU's tennis team in 1968-69. Served as Athletic Director at Durham High School (1980-94) and Durham School of the Arts (1994-2005).
