Trenton Central Claims 20 Medals at Lee Calhoun High
School Invitational
Sanderson H.S. Sweeps the Sprints, Wins Meet-High Seven Gold Medals
DURHAM, NC -- Trenton Central High School captured
a meet-best 20 medals during the 14th annual Lee Calhoun High School Track
& Field Invitational on a cold and wet Saturday (March 25) in Durham,
N.C. on the campus of North Carolina Central University.
Trenton (N.J.) Central's girls' and boys'
teams contributed evenly with 10 medals apiece, while the ladies claimed
four of the school's six gold medals. Trenton Central medalled in 11 of
the 12 relay events, including three first place efforts (boys 4x100m,
girls sprint medley, girls 4x400m).
Trenton Central was topped individually by
Cora Dayon with a gold medal in the girls triple jump (36-feet, 10.25-inches)
and a silver medal in the high jump (5-4), followed by Cintella Spotwood
with a gold medal in the girls shot put (34-10.75) and a bronze in the
discus throw (91-5).
Sanderson High School (Raleigh, N.C.) won
a meet-high seven gold medals, including four relay victories (boys 4x800m,
boys sprint medley, boys 4x200m, boys 4x400m) and a sweep in the individual
sprints, en route to 13 medals overall. Cherell Williams won the girls
100-meter dash with a winning time of 12.75 seconds, while Chris Snype
won the boys 100m dash in 11.23 seconds.
Oxon Hill (Md.) High School took home the
second-most medals with 16, including its lone gold medal going to Aaron
Johnson, who won the boys high jump with a leap of 6-feet, 8-inches.
C.E. Jordan High School (Durham, N.C.) captured
11 medals, including three relay victories (girls distance medley, boys
distance medley, girls 4x800m) and individual gold medals by Sonie Gmseh
(girls high jump/5-4), Siddiq Haynes (boys discus throw/129-6) and Priya
Khatri (girls 1600m run/5:38.99). Jordan's Myreon Sutton-Johnson claimed
bronze medals in the boys shot put (42-7) and discus throw (109-4).
Hillside High School (Durham, N.C.) earned
six medals, including a gold medal performance by Chenel McFadden in the
girls 400m hurdles (1:07.31). Jamie Brown placed second in the girls shot
put (32-6) and discus throw (93-10), while Jasmine Carter finished third
in the girls long jump (16-5.25) and high jump (5-2).
The annual track and field event, which pays
tribute to NCCU's first Olympic gold medalist, featured more than 200 student-athletes
from 15 high schools representing four states (North Carolina, Virginia,
Maryland, New Jersey) and Washington, DC.
LEE CALHOUN LEGACY
In 1956, Calhoun returned from Melbourne,
Australia, as NCCU's first Olympic gold medalist, winning the 110-meter
hurdle event. Four years later, Calhoun became the first back-to-back
winner of that event, earning a second gold medal in the 1960 Olympic Games
in Rome, Italy.
Now deceased, his memory lives on with the running of the annual Lee
Calhoun High School Invitational. |
