BOSTON'S CAREER NIGHT LIFTS NCCU PAST FAYETTEVILLE STATE
[Game Statistics]
(Jan. 4, 2001)  North Carolina Central University senior Jimmy Boston scored a career-high 31 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to spark the visiting Eagles to an 82-80 win over Fayetteville State at Capel Arena.
Entering the contest, Boston needed eight points to reach the 1,000 plateau. The senior from Washington, NC took care of that task quickly, netting his eighth point at the 14:44 mark to give the Eagles a 20-6 lead. NCCU finished the half with a 46-35 advantage. In the second half, the margin grew to as much as 20 points after FSU head coach Michael Bernard picked up two technical fouls and was ejected from the game. Boston connected on all four free throws to make the score 63-43 with 13:48 left in the contest.
The Broncos, however, stormed back during the final six minutes with a 16-3 run to cut the Eagle lead to 81-80 with 21 seconds to play. NCCU's Elliott McNair hit 1-of-2 free throws with 19 ticks on the clock to give the Eagles an 82-80 lead. After an FSU timeout, the Broncos' Christon Simmons had an open look at a three-point shot with 6 seconds left, but missed. After battling for possession of the ball, Boston grabbed the rebound, his 11th of the game, to preserve the CIAA Western Division victory.
The win for NCCU (4-6) was the first at Fayetteville State in exactly four years, last beating the Broncos on their home court 67-50 on Jan. 4, 1997.
Eagle guard Joey Ellis scored 14 points, while Shawn Ray and McNair added 11 points each.
FSU (7-3) was led by Simmons with 33 points and 10 rebounds, while Kenny Haywood chipped in 11 points and 9 boards.
