SULTRY SECOND HALF SHOOTING PROPELS NCCU TO 80-75 WIN OVER BSU
DURHAM, NC - After trailing by as much as 12
points in the second half, the North Carolina Central University Eagles
rallied amid a hot shooting second half to upset the visiting Bowie State
University Bulldogs 80-75 on Thursday inside McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
NCCU, now on a three-game winning streak, matches its longest win streak
of the season.
NCCU (11-12, 6-10) trailed 41-29 with 17:43
remaining and behind 77 percent second half shooting fought its way back,
tying the score at 50-50 with 11:05 left in the second half. During the
rest of the second frame, the teams traded baskets, both getting up by
as much four, before NCCU grabbed the lead for good at 67-65 with 3:03
to play. From there the Eagles held off All-CIAA performer Gil Goodrich
and BSU, ultimately winning by the 80-75 final.
Head coach Henry Dickerson's unit was led
by senior guard Chris Mayshack, who converted all eight of his free-throw
attempts en route to a team-high 20 points, including four three-point
field goals. Fellow senior Jason Hervey amassed 14 points and six rebounds,
while Bryan Ayala stuffed the stat sheet accumulating 12 points, six rebounds
and six assists.
BSU (15-6, 11-6) had three players (Goodrich,
senior forward Tyronne Beale and junior guard Jason Ingram) in double-figures.
Goodrich, destined by many prognosticators to be named CIAA Player of the
Year, struggled from the floor (6-22 FG, 5-17 3pt) behind the excellent
defense of freshman guard Brandon Alston and freshman forward Joshua
Worthy. Beale tallied 22 points and nine rebounds in 40 minutes of action
and Ingram recorded 11 points and seven rebounds.
