NCCU'S RAY, NICKENS EARN CONFERENCE HONORS

     North Carolina Central University senior guard Shawn Ray and freshman guard Charles Nickens received honors from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association for their play during the 2002-03 men's basketball campaign.
Shawn Ray - Photo by Wayne JerniganCharles Nickens - photo by Wayne Jernigan     Ray, a 6-5 native of Raleigh, NC, was named to the All-CIAA Team as the only player in the conference to be ranked in all of the league's major statistical categories. Ray is currently 10th in scoring (18.6 ppg), 13th in rebounding (6.2 rpg), sixth in assists (3.7 apg), third in steals (2.4 spg), and 11th in blocked shots (0.8 bpg). The team captain has also established himself as one of the best all-around men's basketball players in school history. In just 69 games during his three seasons at NCCU, Ray has accumulated 1,133 points, 412 rebounds, 200 assists, 158 steals and 61 blocked shots. Among the school's all-time career leaders, he is currently 20th in scoring, eighth in scoring average, second in steals and 13th in assists.
     Nickens, a 6-3 native of Durham, NC, was voted to the CIAA All-Rookie Team after establishing himself as one of the conference's top long range threats. A two-time CIAA Rookie of the Week selection (Dec. 1 and Dec. 8.), Nickens ranks 12th in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (35.8 percent) and 13th in the league in three-point field goals made (1.65 per game). He has scored double-figures 10 times for the Eagles, including a season-high 20 points versus Pfeiffer University on Nov. 30, 2002.
