junior Corey Tabron hit the game-winning three-point basket with
19 seconds left in the third overtime period to lift the Eagles to an upset
victory over Johnson C. Smith, 105-103, at McLendon-McDougald Gym in Durham,
NC.
NCCU junior forward Shawn Ray scored
a career-high 30 points, while adding 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals
in 46 minutes of action. Senior forward Boswell King, playing in
his final home game at NCCU, amassed a career-high 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Johnson C. Smith (20-6, 12-4 CIAA, 9-1 CIAA West),
the CIAA Western Division Champions and ranked No. 4 in the South Atlantic
Region, was topped by Antoine Sims with 30 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals
and 3 assists. Jamaal Young added 17 points and 9 boards for the
Golden Bulls, while Marco Spears contributed 17 points, 8 caroms and 3
blocked shots.
NCCU point guard Gary Cobb, who hit a floating
jumper in the lane at the end of regulation to send the game into the first
overtime, finished with 15 points and 5 assists. Freshman shooting guard
Curtis
Knight tallied 11 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists for the Eagles (8-17,
7-9 CIAA, 5-5 CIAA West). Senior center Dekendric Perry ended his
playing days at NCCU's McLendon-McDougald Gym with 5 points, 3 rebounds,
4 assists and 2 blocked shots.
After 2 hours, 58 minutes from opening tip to final
buzzer, a crowd of 2,252 witnessed 19 ties and 32 lead changes.
