NCCU Men Suffer Setback to No. 14 ECSU
DURHAM, NC -- North Carolina Central University men's
basketball battled Elizabeth City State, the 14th-ranked team in NCAA Division
II, to the final seconds of the game, but it resulted in a 73-70 Eagle
loss.
With one tick on the clock, a three-point attempt
by Eagle forward Damon Lumpkin was blocked by ECSU's Che' Lugo to
preserve the Viking victory. ECSU lifts its record to 18-3,
while the Eagles fall to 13-9.
Viking guard William Fitzgerald led all scorers
with 22 points, while Marcus Riddick contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds
for ECSU.
Eagles Jimmy Boston and D.J. Ward
each scored 19 points. NCCU's leading scorer, Brett Harper,
was held to 2 points in 20 minutes of play.
NCCU connected on just 7-of-24 from three-point
range, including 2-for-8 in the second half. ECSU out-rebounded the
Eagles 43-31, including a 18-13 advantage on the offensive glass.
