NCCU EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS AT NCAA OUTDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP
EMPORIA, Kansas -- North Carolina Central
University freshman Michael Patterson (Pleasantville, NJ) made the
most of his first trip to a national championship event, the 1999 NCAA
Division II Outdoor Track Championship in Emporia, Kansas.
Patterson and teammates Tavius Walker, Albert
Newkirk and Floyd Ingalls finished fourth in the 4x100 meter
relay with a season-best time of 40.60 to claim All-America honors.
"They performed like technicians with the stick," NCCU head coach Michael
Lawson said. "After stumbling in the preliminaries, they were
able to put it together in the finals and finish the season as the fourth-fastest
team in the country."
Patterson then raced for individual All-America
honors in the 400-meter dash with a fifth place performance of 47.38.
"Patterson ran real well in his first trip to the nationals," Lawson said
about the freshman. "As he continues to mature and develop more strength,
he will contend for a national championship (in the 400m)."
Walker, who qualified for the national championship
in two individual events, did not advance past the preliminary rounds of
the 100m or 200m dash.
As a team, the Eagles finished tied for 29th with
9 points.
