(A poem written by Eagle head coach Phil Spence for his 2003-04 men's basketball team)

Can We Get It Done?

We are coming off of a winning season.
We won the Legacy Classic by beating A&T.
We are Western Division Champions,
And the “Coach of the Year” was bestowed upon me.

We won nine out of ten games this summer,
And the team wasn’t close to being complete.
Can you visualize us as CIAA Champions?
Now wouldn’t that be nice and sweet.

Remember, work comes before reward,
Success is not easy or cheap.
If we are determined and disciplined,
We can make that championship leap.

Let’s set some goals and reach them,
Let’s work hard every step of the way.
This will be the year of the Eagle,
And no price is too high to pay.

This journey requires heart and toughness,
We have to be mentally and physically strong.
We have to be coachable and understanding,
And we must stay focused all season long.

I can only coach and prepare you,
It’s up to you to give and be your best.
Let’s make our dream come true,
And put this “not winning a championship” to rest.
