NCCU'S JONES TOSSES NO-HITTER IN SWEEP OF BOWIE STATE
DURHAM, NC -- North Carolina Central
University senior pitcher Jennifer Jones tossed a no-hitter in game
one versus Bowie State University, then allowed only one hit in game two
as the Lady Eagles swept the Lady Bulldogs (8-0, 9-1) in the season opening
doubleheader for both squads held at Hillside High School.
Jones, a transfer from North Carolina A&T
State University, struck out nine of the 17 batters she faced during the
no-hitter ... her first outing as a Lady Eagle. The Louisburg, NC native
also drove in two runs with a two-out triple in the fourth inning.
NCCU freshman left fielder Candace Spruill
(Raleigh, NC) sparked the Lady Eagle offense with three triples, two RBI
and two runs scored. Rookie center fielder Taheisha Wilder (Louisburg,
NC) also tallied three hits, including an RBI double, and scored twice
to help NCCU claim an 8-0 victory.
In game two, Jones held the Lady Bulldogs
hitless into the fourth inning, but Courtney Walls sent a line drive to
right field for a one-out triple. Walls later scored on a wild pitch to
spoil the shutout bid. Jones finished with seven stikeouts during the 9-1
win.
Wilder again figured heavily in the Lady Eagle
offense by posting two hits, including a triple, and scoring three times.
NCCU sophomore right fielder Lauren Edwards (Freeport, NY) added
two hits, two runs scored, and the game-ending RBI in the bottom of the
fifth inning.
