NCCU SOFTBALL CLAIMS WEEKEND SWEEP OF VUU, VSU

      DURHAM, NC -- North Carolina Central University swept a weekend series against visiting Virginia schools by beating Virginia State University (10-4, 11-2) on Saturday and defeating Virginia Union University (14-0, 6-5) on Sunday at Hillside High School in Durham, N.C.
     NCCU remains perfect in conference play with a 10-0 CIAA record, while improving to 20-13 overall.
     On Sunday, NCCU junior pitcher Clarisse Steans opened the afternoon by tossing a one-hit shutout, while the Lady Eagles' bats exploded for a 14-0 game one victory over Virginia Union. Freshman Casey Rodriquez hit 3-for-3 with four RBI, while fellow rookie Sophia Blue also went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
     In game two, Virginia Union held a 5-2 lead until the Lady Eagles posted four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to edge the Lady Panthers 6-5. Sophomore Shirley Torain sparked NCCU by going 3-for-3 with three RBI and a home run, while senior Rena Armwood also dialed long distance as a pinch hitter in the fifth.
     In game one against Virginia State on Saturday, three Lady Eagles - Asha Sutton, Armwood and Torain - blasted home runs to power NCCU to a 10-4 victory. Sutton finished with three hits, three runs scored and three RBI. Freshman pitcher Stacey Greene struck out eight batters to collect the win.
     In Saturday's game two, Rodriquez amassed five RBI with two home runs and a triple, while Torain drove in four runs on two hits to lead NCCU to an 11-2 win over the Lady Trojans. Steans tossed a two-hitter to earn the victory.
