NCCU Pounds Out 25 Hits in Sweep of Saint Paul's
DURHAM, NC - North Carolina Central University
amassed 25 hits, including nine extra base hits, during a doubleheader
sweep (21-2, 11-1) of Saint Paul's College at Hillside High School in Durham
on Tuesday.
In game one, NCCU put 13 runs on the scoreboard
in the first inning and then cruised to a 21-2 victory. The Lady Eagles
pounded out 14 hits, including five doubles and a triple, in 26 plate appearances.
NCCU sophomore Candace Spruill (Raleigh, NC) led the way with a
pair of doubles and three runs batted in, while freshman Lakeshia Sheppard
(Snow Hill, NC) also drove in three runners on two hits, including a two-run
triple in the first inning.
Lady Eagle pitcher Brandie Hines (Kinston,
NC) tossed a two-hitter to record her second win of the season.
In game two, NCCU rookie hurler Clarisse
Steans (Macon, GA) struck out 10 batters during a one-hit complete
game performance for an 11-1 win. Her no-hit bid was broken up by a two-out
single in the fourth inning.
NCCU was paced offensively by freshman Kendra
Tedder (Durham, NC/Hillside H.S.), who went 3-for-3 with a double and
a RBI, while fellow rookie Asha Sutton (LaGrange, NC) drove in a
pair of runs on two hits.
The Lady Eagles improve to 11-18 after winning
nine of their last 12 games.
