NCCU SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH WINSTON-SALEM STATE
Lady Eagle Run for CIAA Western Division Title Falls
Short
DURHAM, NC (Campus Hills Park) -- North Carolina
Central University needed to defeat first place Winston-Salem State University
twice Friday to claim the CIAA Western Division regular season title.
The second place Lady Eagles won game one 11-9, but lost game two 7-6 to
fall one run shy of the regular season divisional bragging rights.
Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the seventh
(and final) inning, NCCU's Latisha McEachern led off with a double
and one out later scored when Rena Armwood knocked a ground ball
between the legs of shortstop Laurie Underwood, cutting the WSSU lead to
one run. Armwood, however, was left stranded at second base as freshman
pitcher Natasha Garrett buckled down to claim the final two outs, earn
the victory, and win the CIAA Western Division regular season crown for
the Lady Rams.
Keneisha Williams topped the Lady Rams at the plate,
going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Underwood drove in two
runs and scored twice for WSSU.
In game one, NCCU scored three runs in the bottom
of the sixth inning, including a two-run home run by Armwood (Southern
H.S.), for the 11-9 win. Freshman Whitney Taylor-Davis
also homered for the Lady Eagles (12-14), while senior Lynn Williams
drove in four runs on two hits. NCCU pitcher Lisa Hicks allowed
five earned runs for the victory.
WSSU (17-8) was led by Rachel Hicks with three hits,
two RBI, and two runs scored.
