North Carolina Central UniversitySOFTBALLThe Official Web Site of the North Carolina Central University "Eagle" Athletics Department(April 15, 2004) [Game One: NCCU 6, ECSU 3] [Game Two: NCCU 6, WSSU 3] NCCU SOFTBALL WINS TWO IN DAY ONE OF CIAA CHAMPIONSHIP Lady Eagles Defeat WSSU to Claim Bragging Rights in CIAA West CHARLOTTE -- North Carolina Central University won both games in day one action at the CIAA Softball Championship at Hornet's Nest Park in Charlotte, NC. NCCU, the No. 3 seed in the West, defeated Elizabeth City State (No. 2 seed East) in game one, then dropped Winston-Salem State (No. 1 seed West) in game two, both by a score of 6-3. Against ECSU, the Lady Eagles manufactured six runs off six hits, two courtesy of rookie shortstop Asha Sutton. Freshman catcher Latisha Judd drove two runs in for NCCU. Rookie hurler Clarisse Steans allowed 10 hits, but only two earned runs with five strikeouts. Against WSSU, Steans tossed a four-hitter and did not allow an earned run. Adija Beaty and Lakeshia Sheppard each had a hit and two RBI for the Lady Eagles. The win was especially sweet for the Lady Eagles, since just two days earlier the conference office declared WSSU the CIAA Western Division Champions after the doubleheader with NCCU was rained out for a third time. A sweep by NCCU would have given the Lady Eagles their first divisional title since 1997. NCCU and Virginia State, the lone undefeated teams in the tournament, face off Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Hornet's Nest Park in Charlotte.
