NCCU SOFTBALL CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH LIVINGSTONE SWEEP
Steans Tosses No-Hitter, Breaks Lady Eagle Record for Strikeouts in a Season

SALISBURY, NC -- North Carolina Central University sophomore pitcher Clarisse Steans tossed a no-hitter in game two as the Lady Eagles closed the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Livingstone College (22-1, 13-0) on Sunday in Salisbury, NC.
Steans struck out six Lady Blue Bears en route to a 13-0 win and her second no-hitter at NCCU. The Lady Eagles offense was topped by junior Ericka Johnson, who came off the bench to go 3-for-3 with four runs batted in.
In game one, Steans collected nine strikeouts during a two-hit, 21-1 victory. Latisha Judd, Lakeshia Sheppard and Candace Spruill had three hits apiece to lead the Lady Eagles, while Kendra Tedder, Shirley Torain and Spruill each recorded home runs.
Steans fifth strikeout of the day broke the single-season record in that category, which was held by current NCCU assistant coach Jennifer Jones, who struck out 157 batters in 2003. Steans now has 168 strikeouts in 2005, and is also the school's career strikeout leader with 316.
NCCU, the 2005 CIAA Western Division champion, improves to 23-16 overall, 22-1 in CIAA play, and 10-0 in the West.
The Lady Eagles will carry a 13-game winning streak into the 2005 CIAA Softball Championship, which starts on Thursday (April 21) in Petersburg, Virginia.
