SMITH (DURHAM, NC - April 19, 2001) North Carolina Central University pounded out 23 hits in a CIAA doubleheader to sweep Johnson C. Smith University (9-3, 15-8) at Hillside Park in Durham on Thursday. In game one, NCCU put four runs on the board in the first inning and three in the third to cruise to a 9-3 victory. Lady Eagle senior Latisha McEachern hit 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while freshman Adija Beaty went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Fellow freshman Stephanie Kyle drove in three runs for the victors. JCSU was led by Alisha Lynn with two hits and two RBI. Lady Eagle senior pitcher Lisa Hicks tossed a three-hitter to earn the win. In game two, NCCU scored eight runs in the third inning, only to see J.C. Smith tie the game at 8-8 in the top of the sixth. The Lady Eagles responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the sixth for a 15-8 victory. NCCU's Kyle went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored, while junior Lanelle Turner hit 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Half of NCCU's 12 game two hits were for extra bases (three doubles, three triples). JCSU's Joy Coleman and Renina Miller tallied two hits and two runs each, while shortstop Star Brown smashed a two-run home run in a losing effort. In her final home game as a Lady Eagle, Hicks earned the win to raise her record to 9-7. Golden Bull hurler Kiana Thomas took both losses for JCSU. The two-game sweep raises NCCU's overall record to 13-11, while JCSU falls to 10-24.
