NCCU SOFTBALL EDGES VIRGINIA STATE IN EXTRA INNINGS, 6-5

     PETERSBURG, VA -- North Carolina Central University freshman first baseman Ashley Henderson drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the defending champion Lady Eagles held off an upset bid by Virginia State University by a final score of 6-5 at the Petersburg (Va.) Sports Complex on Thursday.
     Henderson went 3-for-3 at the plate and recorded seven putouts in the field, while teammate Natasha Bailey had three runs batted in on a single and a two-run home run in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
     NCCU led 5-1 through five innings of play, but the Lady Trojans scored four times on four hits, all coming with two outs, to force extra innings.
Sophomore pitcher Stacey Greene struck out five batters in a complete-game victory for NCCU (31-9).
     NCCU will face Bowie State University in the semifinals on Friday at 12:30 p.m. on the campus of VSU.
