NCCU SOFTBALL EARNS FIVE WEEKLY CONFERENCE HONORS
HAMPTON, VA -- The North Carolina Central University
softball team accounted for five of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association's weekly softball honors for the week of April 13-19. NCCU
senior third baseman Shenika Worthy was voted as the CIAA Player
of the Week, and Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore pitcher Clarisse
Steans was named CIAA Pitcher of the Week, sophomore shortstop Asha
Sutton was named CIAA Defensive Player of the Week, and head coach
Larry
Keen was selected as the CIAA Coach of the Week.
Worthy, a native of Decatur, Georgia, earned
both CIAA Player of the Week and Offensive Player of the Week honors after
averaging .615 at the plate with 8 hits in 13 at-bats in four games last
week. She had one double, one triple and two home runs to go along with
12 runs batted in. Worthy is currently the team leader with a .551 batting
average.
Steans, a native of Macon, Georgia, was chosen
as the CIAA Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season after posting
a 4-0 record with an earned run average of 0.45 and holding opponents to
a .116 batting average. She collected 20 strikeouts in 20 innings of work,
and
ended the regular season on April 17 against Livingstone College by
throwing her second no-hitter at NCCU.
Sutton, a native of LaGrange, North Carolina,
was chosen as the CIAA Defensive Player of the Week for the first time
this season. She had six put outs, six assists, and no errors to
lead the infield during the four game stretch. Sutton finished the
season by leading the CIAA in hits (57), runs scored (54), and tied for
the lead with 17 doubles. She was also second in triples (8), and
total bases (96).
Keen, now in his fourth season as head coach
of the Lady Eagles, was selected as the CIAA Coach of the Week for the
fourth time this season after guiding his squad to a 4-0 record with doubleheader
sweeps of Winston-Salem State, and Livingstone. NCCU has won 21 of the
last 22 games, including 13 consecutive victories.
NCCU is now 21-1 in the CIAA and 23-16 overall.
The Lady Eagles will now compete in the CIAA Championships this week (Apr.21-23)
in Petersburg, VA
