NCCU Softball Denied Second Upset of Top-Seeded Shaw at CIAA Championship

CHARLOTTE, NC -- After waiting to resume play at the 2003 CIAA Softball Championship for two rainy days, North Carolina Central University had lost its momentum from an opening round upset of top-seeded Shaw University, and on Sunday morning suffered an anticlimactic 10-1 setback to the Shaw Lady Bears at Hornets Nest Park in Charlotte, NC.
It just wasn't meant to be for the Lady Eagles.
In the top of the first inning, NCCU had runners on first and second with no outs when a line drive by Jennifer Jones was caught and turned into a double play.
Then, in the bottom half of the first, Shaw scored six runs on just four hits and three Lady Eagle errors.
Looking to mount a comeback in the third, NCCU had bases loaded with no outs, but failed to score after two infield pop-ups and a ground-out to end the inning.
Freshman designated hitter Reesie Holsey hit 2-for-2 and scored the lone run for NCCU (13-12) on an RBI single by Jones.
