NCCU's Turner Earns Academic All-America Softball
Honors
(STAMFORD, CONN. - June 7, 2001) North
Carolina Central University junior shortstop Lanelle Turner has
been selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America Softball Second
Team, College Division, as chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information
Directors of America).
A native of Chester, Virginia, Turner has
earned an overall grade point average of 3.744 with a major of Business
Administration, while also being recognized as a University Scholar in
2001.
Turner, an All-CIAA Second Team member in
each of the past three seasons as the team's starting shortstop, led this
year's Lady Eagles with 48 hits, 49 runs scored and 74 infield assists.
She posted a batting average of .457 with seven doubles, five triples and
29 runs batted in.
She turned in one of her best performances
of the season in the semifinals of the CIAA Championships (April 27, 2001)
against Fayetteville State by hitting 3-for-5 with a double, and four runs
scored.
Turner is the lone representative (out of
33 All-America selections to the First, Second and Third Teams) from a
Historically Black College and University (HBCU), and is the only student-athlete
on the first or second team from a North Carolina institution.
