1997 SEASON REVIEW:
DURHAM, NC -- Powered by a 14-2 conference
record, including a 22-14 overall mark, the North Carolina Central University
softball squad has earned the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(CIAA) Southern Division championship title for the 1997 regular season.
The Lady Eagles tied Shaw University with an 8-2
division record, but NCCU finished 6-0 against Northern division opponents
while Shaw ended at 5-1.
Five Lady Eagles earned All-Conference honors to
lead the charge for NCCU. First baseman Tia Watlington, shortstop
Michelle Harrison, second baseman Lynn Williams, and pitcher
Marvel Wall each secured positions on the 1997 All-CIAA Second Team,
while freshman catcher Stephanie Spindler was selected to the 1997
CIAA All-Rookie Team.
Watlington, from Winston-Salem, NC, hit .392 (49-for-125)
with 26 runs batted in (RBI), a team-best 30 stolen bases, a team-high
six home runs, and a team-high 49 runs scored.
Harrison, a native of Salem, VA, led the team with
a .457 batting average (42-for-92), while boasting 27 stolen bases and
the top fielding percentage among infielders (.918).
Spindler, a native of Vancouver, WA, hit .417 with
a team-high 53 hits in 127 plate appearances, while adding 11 doubles,
10 triples, and two home runs for a team-best .709 slugging percentage.
Spindler also tallied 47 runs scored and 31 RBI.
Williams, hailing from Burlington, NC, finished
third on the team with a .414 batting average (48-for-116), while collecting
six triples and a team-best 26 walks.
Wall, a native of Mt. Holly, NJ, and the lone pitcher
for the Lady Eagles, finished her final season with a record of 15-15.
Three Lady Eagles, Watlington, Harrison, and Wall,
were also named to the 1997 CIAA Softball All-Tournament Team for their
outstanding play during the conference championship.
