NCCU Softball Advances to CIAA Semifinal

RICHMOND, VA --  North Carolina Central University defeated Shaw (8-7 in extra innings) and Bowie State (14-5) in day one action to advance to the semifinals of the 1999 CIAA Softball Championship in Richmond, VA.
NCCU, the reigning conference champions, trailed Shaw in game one 6-3 heading into the sixth inning.  In the bottom of the sixth, Lady Eagle freshman Whitney Taylor-Davis hit a solo HR and Stephanie Spindler smashed a two-run double and later scored to take a 7-6 lead.  Shaw tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the seventh.  The teams stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth inning, when freshman Lanelle Turner drove in Tiffany Edwards for the game-winning run.
In game two, NCCU crushed the No. 1 seed of the Eastern Division, Bowie State, 14-5.  NCCU was led by Spindler, named the 1999 CIAA Player of the Year, with a double and triple in a 3-for-5 performance.  Latisha McEachern also went 3-for-5 with a HR for the Lady Eagles.
NCCU (14-14) plays Virginia State, the only other undefeated team left in the tournament, at 10 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals.
