NCCU WINS CIAA SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
LADY EAGLES SWEEP VIRGINIA STATE FOR CONFERENCE TITLE

RALEIGH, NC --  North Carolina Central University swept Virginia State University in the best-of-three playoffs, 11-2 and 10-1, to win the 1998 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Softball Championship at Lion's Park in Raleigh.
NCCU freshman pitcher Lisa Hicks (Detroit, MI) collected both wins for the Lady Eagles, allowing just two earned runs in two games, to earn tournament honors as the Most Valuable Player.
"Lisa really matured today," NCCU head coach Ingrid Wicker (Durham, NC) said about her rookie pitcher.  "When we kept her in the line-up for the second game, it gave her a lot of confidence, because she knew we had confidence in her."
Senior shortstop Michelle Harrison (Salem, VA), the 1998 CIAA Player of the Year, went 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBI and four runs scored in the two-game sweep for NCCU.  During the five-game tournament run, Harrison hit 12-for-16 with 11 RBI and six runs scored.
NCCU sophomore catcher Stephanie Spindler (Vancouver, WA) amassed five RBI on the day, freshman center fielder Rena Armwood (Durham, NC) hit 4-for-5 with three runs scored, and freshman third baseman Rebecca Freeman (Andover, NY) went 4-for-6.
NCCU's Hicks, Harrison, Spindler and junior Sylvia Latson (Detroit, MI) earned All-Tournament Team honors.
"(Winning the CIAA Championship) says a lot about the individuals on this team," Wicker said.  "Through all of the adversity the team faced this year, they worked together to get through it."
The conference championship is the first for the Lady Eagle softball program since the sport was introduced at NCCU in 1977.
