ST. AUGUSTINE'S REPEATS AS MEN'S & WOMEN'S 
OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONS

     (Durham, NC - Saturday, April 21, 2001)  Saint Augustine's College captured both the men's and women's team titles at the 2001 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Durham, NC on Saturday. The wins mark the fifth consecutive title for the women (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001) and the fourth straight for the men (1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001).
     The Lady Falcons cruised to victory with 205 points, defeating the closest competitor by 119.5 points. The battle for runner-up was close, with Virginia Union taking second place with 85.5 points and Shaw finishing third with 81 points. The St. Augustine's women were led by Carlene Cummings and Kia Davis. Cummings was named Most Outstanding Field Athlete with first place performances in the long jump (20' 8.75") and triple jump (41' 5.25"), while also winning the 100-meter dash (12.9) and running anchor on the conference champion 4x100m relay squad. Davis was selected Most Outstanding Track Athlete after winning the 100m hurdles (13.48) and 200m dash (23.89), and running on the first place 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay teams.
     The St. Augustine's men's squad posted 216 points for the win, followed by Virginia State with 111 points and Livingstone with 76 points. For the second straight year, LeVar Williams of Virginia State was recognized as the Most Outstanding Field Athlete after winning the discus throw (137' 6"), placing second in the javelin throw (146' 4") and third in the shot put (46' 4.25"). Running on his home turf, Jason Smoots of N.C. Central was crowned Most Outstanding Track Athlete following victories in the 100m dash (10.47) and 200m dash (21.24).
