NCCU MEN, WOMEN PLACE THIRD AT CIAA INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - North Carolina Central University
placed third in both the men's and women's team competitions at the 2005
CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Newport News, Virginia,
on Sunday (Feb. 13).
NCCU sophomore Aisha Brown captured an individual conference title
by winning the women's mile run with a time of 5:44.12, while freshman
teammate Yolanda Barber placed second in 5:45.21 to earn All-CIAA
honors. Barber also claimed all-conference recognition with a second place
finish in the 800-meter run (2:26.42).
Brown and Barber were also members of the
CIAA champion distance medley relay, along with junior Christina Harris
and freshman Jessika Gresham-Moore, which posted a winning time
of 13:01.42 to beat out second place St. Augustine's and third place Shaw.
The NCCU women placed third as a team with
47 points, trailing second place Bowie State University (78 points) and
repeat conference champion Saint Augustine's College (167 points).
The NCCU men also placed third as a team with
59 points, narrowly missing Virginia State for second place (64 points),
while St. Augustine's repeated as conference champion (157 points).
NCCU sophomore Dorian Turner and senior
Detric
Branch posted NCAA provisional-qualifying times during all-conference
runs in the men's 200m dash. Turner placed second with a time of 21.96,
while Branch finished third in 22.23.
Junior Jean-Pierre Joubert placed third
in the 5,000m run (16:30.20) and freshman Eric Speer placed third
in the mile run (4:34.51) to each earn All-CIAA honors for the Eagles.
NCCU captured second place and all-conference
merit in both the 4x400m relay (Speer, Austin-Lamar Hogan, Rashaad
Lee, Turner - 3:22.37) and distance medley (Lee, Turner, Robert
Curington, Speer - 10:44.30).
