NCCU SENDS NINE TO NCAA INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Eagles Men Look To Improve Upon Best Ever Finish in 2006
DURHAM, NC -- North Carolina Central University will send nine student-athletes to the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 9-10 in Boston at the Reggie Lewis Center.
After banner years in 2006 and 2007,  NCCU head coach Michael Lawson believes the NCCU men are poised for their best indoor national championship team finish in school history. NCCU's eight men will have 10 chances in eight events to better the Eagles' previous best result, which was a sixth place finish in the 2006  Indoor championships. Furthermore, the additions of jumpers freshman Mark Davis (Cape Coral, Fla.) and sophomore William Scott (Charlotte, N.C.) gives the Eagles chances in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.
"With the eight guys that will compete, we are hoping to add up enough points to get into the top four," Lawson said. "It's going to be tough, but our expectations are high."
Two Eagles - junior Brian Hope (Raleigh, N.C) and sophomore Christopher Davis (Charlotte, N.C.) - qualified in the 60m dash, while Hope and senior Hakeem Mohammed (Winston-Salem, N.C.) will compete in the 200m dash.
Eagles freshman Carrington Queen (Philadelphia, Pa.) will be NCCU's lone competitor in the 60m hurdles, qualifying with a time of 8.03 seconds and sophomore Brandon Jones (Lynchburg, VA) will be the only Eagle in the 800m run, after qualifying with a time of 1:53.09.
Mohammed, freshman Karjuan Williams, Hope and Jones will compete in the men's 4x400m relay for Coach Lawson, with junior Maurice Gailey as the squad's alternate.
NCCU sophomore Jessica Mills (Thorofare, N.J.) enters the championships as one of the top triple-jumpers in the country.
The 2006 CIAA indoor triple jump champion, Mills' qualified with a 12.58m jump. Last season, Mills captured a national title in the women's triple jump at the 2006 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Emporia, Kansas.
"I have high hopes for Jessica," said Lawson. "A lot of people are gunning for her because she won a national championship as a freshman."
