Three Eagles Headed To NCAA Indoor Track & Field
Championships
Three North Carolina Central University sophomores
- Rashaad Lee, Dorian Turner and Hakeem Mohammed -
will be competing in the 2005 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field
Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, March 11-12.
Lee, a native of Willingboro, New Jersey,
and member of the 2004 CIAA Cross Country championship team, will be making
his first trip to a national championship event after qualifying 13th in
the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 1:52.86. "With this being
his first experience at a national meet, I am not sure what to expect (out
of Lee)," said NCCU head track & field/cross country coach Michael
Lawson. "If he can keep from getting nervous, I think he will come out
as an All-American."
Turner, a native of Irmo, South Carolina,
who earned All-America honors last year as a member of the 4x400m relay
team during the outdoor season, has qualified 11th for this year's indoor
event in the 200m dash with a time of 21.66. Turner claimed All-CIAA honors
in the 200m dash with a second place finish at the conference championship
meet. "It's amazing that Dorian has qualified in the 200m dash, because
he is a high jumper that has just started training in this event," Lawson
said.
Mohammed, a native of Winston-Salem, NC, who
was also a member of NCCU's 4x400m relay team that captured All-America
honors last year during the outdoor season, qualified 14th in the 400m
dash with a time of 48.50. Mohammed, the reigning CIAA 100m dash champion,
participated in the outdoor 100m and 200m dashes at the NCAA championships
last spring, but did not advance to the finals. He is still recovering
from a hamstring injury he suffered earlier this season. "Mentally he is
there," Lawson said about Mohammed, "but we do not know how he will hold
up physically."
