NCCU MEN PLACE THIRD AT INDOOR TRACK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Eagle Sophomore Davis Wins National Title in 60-Meter Dash

BOSTON – North Carolina Central University earned its highest-ever team finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships by placing third on Saturday (March 10) inside the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Christopher Davis     Powered by sophomore Christopher Davis (Charlotte, N.C.), who won the national championship in the men’s 60-meter dash with a time of 6.72 seconds, the Eagles tallied 43 points to finish five points ahead of Adams State and behind only traditional powers Abilene Christian (48.5 points) and Saint Augustine’s (88 points), the 2007 men’s national champions.
“I am so proud of these guys,” said NCCU head coach Michael Lawson. “Nearly all of them posted personal-best times. They pulled together and went to work.
“Christopher shocked everybody (in the 60m dash),” Lawson said about Davis, who ran the fastest 60-meter time in Division II this season (6.71 seconds) in Friday’s preliminaries. “You are talking about only six seconds, so you don’t have time to make a mistake. He really hit his start. He has worked hard in practice recently, and it carried over into the nationals.”
Jessica Mills     NCCU junior Brian Hope (Raleigh, N.C.) claimed All-America honors in three events. Hope placed third in the 60m dash (6.80) and sixth in the 200m dash (21.62), then teamed up with freshman Karjuan Williams, sophomore Brandon Jones (Lynchburg, Va.) and junior Maurice Gailey (Pensacola, Fla.) to finish second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:09.92.
NCCU senior Hakeem Mohammed (Winston-Salem, N.C.) claimed All-America honors with a third place effort in the 200m dash (21.44), while sophomore William Scott (Charlotte, N.C.) placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 15.04 meters (49-feet, 4.25-inches) for an All-America citation.
On Friday, freshman Mark Davis (Cape Coral, Fla.) earned All-America honors in the long jump by finishing fourth (7.35 meters / 24-1.5) to help the Eagles improve upon their previous best team effort at the indoor nationals of sixth place in 2006.
On the women’s side, NCCU sophomore Jessica Mills (Thorofare, N.J.) received All-America honors in the triple jump by placing second with a distance of 12.59 meters (41-3.75).
