SHAW'S COLEMAN BREAKS RECORD AT L.T. WALKER MEET
NCCU's Powell Wins Third Consecutive Title in 100-Meter Hurdles

     DURHAM, NC -- Shaw University distance runner Tania Coleman set a new meet record in the women's 3,000-meter run during the 13th annual LeRoy T. Walker Olympic Development track & field event hosted by North Carolina Central University in Durham.
     Coleman's winning time of 10:38.79 broke the old standard of 10:43.84 set back in 1996. She also won the 1,500m run (5:32.22) and placed ninth in the 800m run (2:35.87).
     Saint Augustine's Lovella Simmons successfully defended her title in the women's long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 5.25 inches, while also winning the triple jump with a distance of 37-feet, 3.75 inches.
     Nakisha Hairston of St. Augustine's repeated in the women's discus throw with a toss of 100-feet, 4 inches, and won the shot put with a distance of 34-feet, 2.25 inches.
     NCCU's Chanda Powell won her third consecutive LTW title in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 14.27.
     North Carolina A&T's John Marshall placed first in both the men's discus throw (130' 6") and shot put (44' 8"), while Portia Baker, running unattached as a member of the Greensboro Pacesetters, won the women's 200m dash (24.73) and 400m run (58.05).
     Other top performers at the 13th annual LeRoy T. Walker meet were:  Asiyah Pelzer of Shaw - first in women's 400m hurdles (1:09.31), second in high jump (5' 2"), third in 400m dash (59.43), and sixth in long jump (17' 0.75"); Marquis Poteat of Shaw - first in men's javelin (105' 8"), second in discus throw (83' 3"), and second in shot put (36' 11"); Lloyd Knight of Shaw - first in men's 400m hurdles (1:03.54) and second in 110m hurdles (16.23); Janay McKie of Duke - first in women's 100m dash (11.95) and second in 200m dash (24.82); Brandon Via of NC A&T - first in men's triple jump (49' 8.25") and second in long jump (23' 9"); Brian Hope of NCCU - first in men's 100m dash (10.92) and third in 200m dash (21.97); and Carmen Williams of NCCU - first in women's javelin throw (93' 10") and second in high jump (5' 2").
     Shaw won three of the four relays, running to victory in the women's 4x100m relay (49.17), the women's 4x400m relay (3:59.02), and the men's 4x400m relay (3:33.77).
