Meet Summary
THE 11TH ANNUAL LEE CALHOUN HIGH SCHOOL INVITATIONAL
The 11th annual Lee Calhoun High School
Track & Field Invitational will be held Saturday, March 29 on the campus
of North Carolina Central University with field events starting at 9 a.m.
and running events beginning at 11 a.m. Admission is free.
The annual track and field event, which pays
tribute to NCCU's first Olympic gold medalist, will feature more than 500
student-athletes from 29 high schools representing four states (North Carolina,
Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware) and Washington, DC. Six Triangle area high
schools - Cardinal Gibbons, Cary, Hillside, Mount Zion, Sanderson and Southeast
Raleigh - will be among the 18 North Carolina schools competing at NCCU
Saturday.
Hillside sophomore Atir Carter is one of three
student-athletes that will be attempting to defend their individual titles.
A year ago, Carter won the high jump as she cleared 5-feet, 2.5 inches.
Other defending champions scheduled to compete are Suitland (MD) High School
senior Deyon Williams in the long jump and Potomac (MD) High School senior
Frederick Ballenger in the shot put.
Two current NCCU track & field student-athletes
captured individual Lee Calhoun Invitational championships during their
high school careers. Hillside graduate Carmen Williams, who has participated
in volleyball, basketball and track & field at NCCU, has a share of
the LCHSI meet record in the high jump. Cresset Christian Academy graduate
Chanda Powell, now an NCAA Division II All-American in the long jump and
60-meter hurdles, won titles in the long and triple jumps before joining
NCCU.
LEE CALHOUN LEGACY
In 1956, Calhoun returned from Melbourne, Australia,
as NCCU's first Olympic gold medalist, winning the 110-meter hurdle event.
Four years later, Calhoun became the first back-to-back winner of that
event, earning a second gold medal in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy.
Now deceased, his memory lives on with the annual
running of the Lee Calhoun High School Invitational.
