NCCU'S HOPE WINS TWO EVENTS AT CHARLOTTE INVITATIONAL
CHARLOTTE, NC -- North Carolina Central University
freshman sprinter Brian Hope won the 100-meter dash and was the
second leg of the winning 4x100m relay squad at the 2003 Charlotte Invitational
hosted by UNC-Charlotte at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex.
Hope, a Raleigh, NC native out of Garner High
School, ran a first place time of 10.72 in the 100m, then teamed up with
James
Richardson, Steven Enoch and Detric Branch to post an
NCAA provisional qualifying time of 40.73 to edge rival Saint Augustine's
(41.30) in the 4x100m relay.
NCCU's 4x400m relay squad, consisting of Austin
Hogan, Branch, Ryan Rutherford and Hope, also recorded an NCAA
provisional qualifying time with a 3:14.00 in a third place effort.
Six-time National Champion Jason Smoots
posted his fastest time of the season in the 200m dash with a winning time
of 21.15.
NCCU sophomore Chanda Powell qualified
for the NCAA Championships with a provisional leap of 6.03 meters to take
second place. The Durham, NC native also ran fifth in the 100m hurdles
with a 14.20, her second-best time of the season.
