     CHARLOTTE, NC -- North Carolina Central University's 4x400-meter relay squad edged rival Saint Augustine's College to captured NCCU's lone conference title at the 2003 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, NC.
     NCCU's foursome of Austin Hogan, Detric Branch, Ryan Rutherford and Brian Hope posted a winning time of 3:14.50, holding off the Falcons at the finish line by three one-hundredths of a second (3:14.53). 
     Hope also earned two individual All-CIAA honors by placing third in both the 100m dash (10.65) and 200m dash (21.46). Branch received All-Conference merit in the 200m dash with a second place time of 21.21. Rutherford finished second in the 800m run with an All-CIAA time of 1:58.41, just five one-hundredths of a second behind the winner.
     Sophomore Steven Enoch improved upon last year's All-CIAA effort by placing second in the long jump with a leap of 6.89 meters.
     The NCCU men's team placed fourth in the overall standings with 70 points.
     For the second straight outdoor season, NCCU sophomore Chanda Powell placed second in the 100m hurdles, this time earning All-CIAA honors with a time of 14.53.
     Carmen Williams received two All-Conference medals, placing second the the javelin throw (31.53m) and third in the high jump (1.57m).
     The NCCU women's team placed sixth with 39 points.
